Background

Google has introduced a range of new artificial intelligence features powered by its Gemini model across its main productivity apps, including Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, and Google Drive. The company said the update will help users generate documents, spreadsheets and presentations faster by using information already stored in their Google Workspace.

The new tools allow Gemini to gather context from services such as Gmail, Chat, and Drive to create structured drafts and organize information automatically. Google said the goal is to make its apps more useful so people can complete tasks without switching to separate AI platforms.

In Docs, a new “Help me create” feature lets users describe what they want, and Gemini will generate a fully formatted first draft using relevant data from their files and emails. Users can then refine sections of the document using the “Help me write” tool. Another feature called “Match writing style” can adjust tone and voice to keep multi-author documents consistent. A “Match the format” option can copy the layout of another document and fill it with new information.

In Sheets, Gemini can now act as a collaborative assistant. With a single prompt, it can create a formatted spreadsheet using data from Gmail, Chat, and Drive. A “Fill with Gemini” tool can automatically generate text, categorize data, and even pull information from the web.

Slides will also gain AI support. Gemini can generate editable slides that match the design of an existing presentation and adjust them based on user instructions. Google said future updates will allow users to create full presentations from a single prompt.

Meanwhile, Drive will include an AI Overview feature that summarizes information from files directly in search results. A new “Ask Gemini in Drive” option will allow users to ask detailed questions across their documents and emails.

Google said the features are rolling out in beta, initially for Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers, with support in English worldwide for Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and in the United States for Drive.
